Leymah Gbowee By: Addison

      Leymah Gbowee

Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 along with Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Tawakkol Karmen for their “non-violent” struggle of women’s rights. The women’s peace movement helped the second Liberian Civil War in 2003.

Gbowee is the founder and president of Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa based in Liberia. It provided educational and leadership opportunities to girls, women, and youth in West Africa.

After she witnessed the effects of war on Liberians she decided to be a trauma councilor to help child soldiers.

When a second Civil War started in 1999 Gbowee got together an interreligious coalition of Christian and Muslim women and organized the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement. She co-founded the Women Peace and Security Network Africa.

Since winning the Nobel Peace Prize she travels all across the world to speak about the damaging and devastating effects of war and gender-based violence and also advocating for women’s high level inclusion in conflict-resolution.

  1. We have read about Esther in chapter 17 and her nice treatment towards child soldiers. I think these women's plays a bigger role during the war.

  3. This is incredible to hear of someone so outspoken. It'd be nice to see more acts of kindness start a title wave like this women's actions.
