Fourah Bay College

Fourah Bay College (FBC)is a public university in Freetown, Sierra Leone, founded in 1827, it’s the oldest university in West Africa. Freetown was known as the "Athens of Africa" as an homage to the college. "When Fourah Bay College sneezes", one student reflects,'all of Sierra Leone catches a cold'. In the mid-1980s, FBC sneezed. The outbreak of rebel war caused by the Revolutionary United Front ( RUF) laid much waste and blood to Sierra Leone evaporating their idealistic dreams of revolution.

Regarded as best colleges, FBC is identified as a constituent college of the University of Sierra Leone, although it remains one of the oldest western style University- “the Harvard of West Africa”, as one academic puts it, because of the wide range of courses offered.

Today’s FBC is totally different and is in a critical condition since the Civil War ended in 2002. With no renovation in recent times, the entire infrastructure is ruined with age and neglect. There is no accommodation facilities for students in last five years, students fighting for tables and chairs. This is partly due to the increase in student population over time, which has not been matched equally by available resources and space. These have almost remained constant. The image below shows us the ruined hostels of college caused by the negligence of administration and government.

The Shabby Hostels of Fourah Bay College
Over the years there’s no communication between the lecturers and administration, inadequate materials for training, lazy students who want to have good degrees without working hard for them, as well as making plagiarism as their habit has worsened the condition of this College.

  7. It makes you realize how much damage can be done by not doing anything. Because of their negligence, so much damage has been done to the school and is continuing to decay and fall apart little by little.

    1. Yes, the negligence by the government and college authorities also puts light on how corrupted they are with the resources of Africa.
